What you need to know about caving in Sagada
Nestled into the Mountain Province of the beautiful Cordillera Region of the Philippines is Sagada. Sagada is a beautiful town with much to offer its visitors and residents, with one of its most popular attractions being Sumaguing Cave. Whether you’ve never gone caving before, or if you’ve caved the world, Sumaguing Cave is an absolute must see when you visit the Philippine Cordillera!
With Cordillera Adventour, you can enjoy either one of the following caving experiences:
Short Course Caving
This course is approximately 2 fun filled hours of spelunking that navigates through the beautiful limestone caverns and crevices of Sumaguing Cave. The magnificent rock formations that have taken thousands of years to form will take your breath away. Some even take the shape of things that your tour guide will definitely point out.
Cave Connection
Not for the faint of heart, Cave Connection is an extended and more physically demanding version of the Short Course Caving that starts at Lumiang cave and then moves through to the connected Sumaguing Cave. This course takes approximate 4 hours to complete however this is very much dependant on the groups level of fitness and how busy the caves are.
Spelunking through Sumaguing Cave does require physical exertion and the dark caves are lit only by the light that you and your guide bring along so if you have claustrophobia or any injuries/conditions that may affect your ability to move through the caves, spelunking is not recommended for you.
What to bring
A tour guide!
Cordillera Adventour will provide you with a highly experienced tour guide/s who will ensure that you have a fun, memorable and safe time traversing through the caves.
Appropriate attire
Wear light, stretchy clothing that dries easily (e.g. active wear). Avoid baggy clothing as it may catch on the rocks and also avoid heavy fabrics as you will get wet and that will make your clothing difficult to move in. It is cold in the caves, but once you start moving, you will have no need for jackets or jumpers. In terms of footwear, strangely enough the best form of footwear you can bring are flip flops! This is because the rocks within the caves, whilst very slippery, are actually better at gripping the skin on your bare feet than they are to any footwear so much of the time, you will be barefoot in the caves.
Water
With any physical activity, it is always a good idea to make sure you have water with you to keep you hydrated.
Waterproof camera
The cave doesn't provide too much lighting, but you’ll definitely want to bring along a waterproof camera to capture the amazing memories you are sure to encounter in the caves
Headlamp
Your guide will bring a lantern which does wonders for lighting your way through the caves, however it is best that you also bring along a headlamp to help you on your journey
Something to remember is that these beautiful caves full of natural rock formations and pristine clear water need to be protected by us all, so please refrain from vandalising or leaving rubbish in the caves and its surrounds. Let’s keep the caves beautiful so that you can enjoy them just as much when you come back next time!
